North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has accused the United States of escalating tensions and provocations on the Korean peninsula, warning that the region now faces the greatest risk of nuclear war. In a speech at a military exhibition in Pyongyang, Kim highlighted the dangerous and acute nature of the current standoff, which he claimed could lead to a catastrophic thermonuclear conflict.

Kim criticized past negotiations with Washington, describing them as fruitless and revealing the U.S.'s "aggressive and hostile" stance toward North Korea. He stated that the country had already reached its limit in negotiations with the U.S., which had not altered its policy toward Pyongyang.

These comments come amidst mounting international concern over North Korea's growing military cooperation with Russia, including reports that North Korea has sent over 10,000 troops to support Russia's invasion of Ukraine. While North Korean state media have yet to comment on the re-election of Donald Trump, who held historic meetings with Kim during his presidency, the lack of progress in their diplomatic talks remains a significant point of contention, as the U.S. continues to press for North Korea’s denuclearization, a demand Kim has rejected in exchange for sanctions relief
