Beirut: Thousands of Lebanese civilians displaced by the devastating war between Israel and Hezbollah are beginning to return home as a ceasefire takes effect. The truce ends months of deadly conflict that caused mass displacement and significant casualties in Lebanon. The war escalated after nearly a year of cross-border attacks by Hezbollah, launched in solidarity with its Palestinian ally Hamas following the latter’s October offensive on Israel. Israel shifted its military focus to Lebanon in September, aiming to secure its northern border from Hezbollah’s attacks. The Iran-backed Hezbollah, which has not yet commented on the ceasefire, has been left significantly weakened after sustaining heavy losses, including the death of its long-time leader, Hassan Nasrallah, in an Israeli airstrike. Despite this, the group remains intact. The ceasefire offers hope for a semblance of stability in the region, though rebuilding efforts in Lebanon are expected to be long and arduous.
