Saudi Arabia has secured a leading position among the top ten global markets for battery energy storage, marked by the launch of the Bisha Project, a 2,000 MWh energy storage initiative one of the largest in the Middle East and Africa.

National Renewable Energy Program Goals

Under the National Renewable Energy Program, overseen by the Ministry of Energy, the Kingdom aims to achieve 48 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2030. Currently, 26 GWh worth of projects are at various stages of development. These initiatives support Saudi Arabia’s goal of 50% electricity production from renewables by 2030.

Saudi Arabia's Global Standing

According to Wood Mackenzie, a leading energy consultancy, Saudi Arabia ranks among the fastest-growing markets for energy storage, with expectations of further growth over the next decade. By 2025, the Kingdom aims to operate 8 GWh of storage projects and 22 GWh by 2026, positioning it as the third-largest energy storage market globally, following China and the U.S.

Bisha Project Features

The Bisha battery energy storage project includes 488 advanced battery containers with a 500 MW storage capacity for four hours. The system enables energy storage during off-peak periods and discharges during peak demand, ensuring a stable electricity supply and contributing to a smarter, more sustainable energy future.

Energy Sector Transformation

Saudi Arabia's energy sector is undergoing a significant transformation, reinforcing its leadership in energy production and export. By the end of 2024, renewable energy projects in various stages of development had reached a total capacity of 44.1 GW.

Enhancing Energy Reliability

Battery storage plays an important role in improving electricity supply reliability, strengthening the National Grid, and advancing the Kingdom’s strategic energy objectives in line with Vision 2030.
