Riyadh, February 19, 2025 – Saudi Arabia has officially enacted significant amendments to its Labor Law, introducing key reforms aimed at strengthening worker protections and improving labor market efficiency. The changes, approved by the Council of Ministers and issued by Royal Decree, align with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 objectives to create a more dynamic and inclusive workforce.
The amendments involve revisions to 38 existing articles, the removal of seven provisions, and the addition of two new articles. These updates introduce enhanced job security measures, expanded employer responsibilities, and a clearer framework for employment contracts.
Key Changes and Worker Benefits
- Enhanced Leave Policies: Maternity leave has been extended, and new provisions for paternity and bereavement leave including for siblings have been introduced.
- Stronger Contractual Protections: Employment contracts for non-Saudi workers must now be in written form with specified terms, ensuring greater security for both employees and employers.
- Employer Obligations: Businesses are required to review and update employment contracts and internal policies to align with the new regulations.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development emphasized that these reforms mark a major step in modernizing labor relations in Saudi Arabia. By fostering a more structured and equitable work environment, the amendments are expected to enhance job stability, attract global talent, and support economic growth.
As businesses adjust to these changes, their compliance will be instrumental in driving the Kingdom’s vision of a competitive and thriving labor market.
