Saudi Arabia’s Al-Junaidi Appointed First Arab Chair of IMSO Advisory Committee

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Eng. Kamal Al-Junaidi, chaired the 51st session of the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO) Advisory Committee, held in London from June 9 to 13, 2025.

Al-Junaidi’s appointment marks a historic milestone as he becomes the first Arab to preside over the committee, highlighting the Kingdom’s growing influence in global maritime governance.

During the session, Al-Junaidi managed discussions and facilitated consensus among representatives from 44 member states on key issues, including oversight of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), implementation of Long Range Tracking and Safety (LRTS) standards, and audits of satellite communication service providers.

He also led deliberations on proposed amendments to maritime safety regulations and reviewed IMSO’s strategic alignment with IMO standards. The committee’s recommendations will be submitted to the IMSO General Assembly for further consideration.

The session underscored Saudi Arabia’s active role in enhancing maritime safety and communication systems, reinforcing its leadership within international maritime organizations.
