Washington: U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has announced plans to impose hefty tariffs on goods coming from Mexico, Canada, and China, set to take effect after his inauguration on January 20. According to U.S. media reports, Trump confirmed that he would approve a 25% tariff on all goods from Mexico and Canada. This tariff will remain in place until issues regarding drug trafficking and illegal immigration are resolved.

Additionally, Trump revealed plans to impose a 10% higher tax on goods imported from China, beyond the existing tariffs. He emphasized that these additional taxes would remain in place until China takes stronger actions to prevent the smuggling of drugs into the U.S. Chinese authorities had previously pledged to take more stringent measures against drug traffickers. In response to Trump’s statement, a Chinese embassy spokesperson noted that China and the U.S. have been in close communication regarding drug control efforts. The spokesperson further added that economic and trade cooperation between China and the U.S. is based on mutual benefit, stressing that no country can win a trade or tariff war.
