London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday, reiterating his backing for Ukraine and its leadership.
In a statement released by his office following the conversation, Starmer emphasized the importance of unity in supporting Ukraine during its ongoing conflict with Russia. "The Prime Minister spoke to President Zelenskyy this evening and stressed the need for everyone to work together," the statement read.
Starmer reaffirmed his support for Zelenskyy as Ukraine’s democratically elected leader and defended the country’s decision to postpone elections due to the ongoing war. He drew a historical comparison, noting that the United Kingdom had also suspended elections during World War II.
The call came after U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Zelenskyy, referring to him as "a dictator without elections" and urging him to swiftly pursue peace or risk losing control of Ukraine. Starmer's statement did not address Trump’s remarks directly but underlined the UK’s commitment to a peace process that ensures Ukraine’s security and deters future Russian aggression.
The UK continues to align with U.S.-led efforts to establish a lasting resolution to the war while maintaining strong support for Kyiv.
