U.S. Halts Funding to Gavi Over Vaccine Safety Concerns, Says Health Secretary Kennedy

Brussels: U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on Wednesday that the United States will no longer provide financial support to Gavi, the vaccine alliance that supplies vaccines to low-income countries.

In a recorded video message sent to Gavi’s fundraising summit in Brussels, Kennedy accused the organization of overlooking vaccine safety standards and making controversial decisions regarding COVID-19 vaccine guidance. He also raised alarm over the safety of the DTPw vaccine, which protects against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis.

In response, Gavi defended its position, stating it maintains strong confidence in the safety and efficacy of the DTPw vaccine. The organization expressed hope for continued collaboration with the U.S. government despite the announcement.

Gavi is currently hosting a pledging summit in Brussels, aiming to secure $9 billion in commitments to fund its operations for the 2026–2030 period. The U.S. has historically been one of Gavi’s largest donors, contributing around $300 million annually — a commitment that had already faced scrutiny under the Trump administration.
