Abuja: At least 20 fishermen have been killed in a brutal attack by Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno, according to local fishermen and security sources. The attack occurred in the fishing community of Gadan Gari on Wednesday around 11:00 GMT.
Modu Ari, a member of the civilian joint task force, reported that the insurgents stormed the area, opening fire on fishermen working near the village. “We have confirmed that at least 20 people were killed in this tragic attack,” Ari said.
A grieving resident, who lost his child in the assault, stated that more than 15 victims have already been buried. The full death toll remains unclear as the community processes the aftermath of the violence.
Borno state, the epicenter of a 16-year insurgency driven by Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), has suffered significant human and economic losses, with millions displaced and a severe humanitarian crisis underway.
The Nigerian military and state officials have not yet issued statements regarding the incident.
This latest attack underscores the persistent threat posed by insurgent groups in the region, as communities grapple with ongoing insecurity and instability.
