Mumbai: Metro...In Dino, a spiritual sequel to Anurag Basu’s 2007 hit Life in a Metro, features a subtle tribute to the late Irfan Khan, thanks to a heartfelt suggestion by actor Konkona Sen Sharma. While the new film has a fresh cast and storyline, Konkona is the only returning actor in a different role.
In the original movie, she played Shruti, who falls for the quirky Monty, portrayed memorably by Irrfan Khan. In Metro In Dino, she plays Kajal, paired with Pankaj Tripathi. Konkona’s idea was to name his character Monty as a tribute.
Director Basu confirmed that the name wasn’t originally in the script, but Konkona proposed it on the first day of shooting, and he agreed instantly. Though the new Monty differs from Irfan’s character, Konkona said the goofy, humorous tone and romantic arc create a nostalgic link.
The ensemble cast includes Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Neena Gupta, and Anupam Kher. The film will be released in theatres on July 4.
