Omega-6 Fats Could Help Fight Diabetes and Heart Disease

Boston: Two new studies presented at the NUTRITION 2025 conference suggest that omega-6 seed oils, long criticised for contributing to chronic disease, may protect against heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Researchers found that higher blood levels of linoleic acid, a key omega-6 fat found in oils like soybean, sunflower, and corn, were linked to reduced inflammation and better blood sugar control.

Linoleic acid, present in many nuts, seeds, and plant oils, has often been blamed for promoting inflammation. However, lead author Dr. Kevin Maki reported that participants with higher linoleic acid levels had lower markers of inflammation, healthier fasting glucose, and lower BMI. The findings challenge the negative perception of seed oils circulating online.

Experts like Dr Cheng-Han Chen say the results support the cardiovascular benefits of linoleic acid, while dietitian Monique Richard emphasized the importance of balance between omega-6 and omega-3 fats. Though more research is needed, including these healthy fats in a whole-food diet may help lower chronic disease risk.
