Mumbai: Cardiologist Dr Alok Chopra has issued a strong warning about the dangers of vaping, saying it may be just as harmful—or even worse—than smoking. In a video posted to Instagram on May 28, he cautioned young people who often view vaping as a safer alternative.
Dr Chopra emphasized that vaping poses serious risks to respiratory and cardiovascular health and can damage the lungs, brain, and reproductive system. He explained that vape liquids often contain harmful substances like nicotine, heavy metals such as nickel, tin, and lead, and chemicals that can cause irreversible lung damage, including conditions like “popcorn lung,” COPD, and even cancer.
He also warned of vaping’s effect on brain development, memory, sleep, mood, and heart health. The social acceptability of vaping leads many to use it more frequently than cigarettes, increasing addiction risk.
While some lung recovery is possible within three years after quitting, he urged people to reconsider before their next puff, stating, “It’s not just vapor—it’s a real risk.”
