Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 2,886

Burma: The military government of Myanmar has reported that the death toll from the earthquake that struck on March 28 has risen to 2,886. In addition, 4,639 people have been injured, while 373 remain missing.

Since the military took control of Myanmar in 2021, access to information has been significantly restricted. All local radio, television, print, and online media are under state control, and internet usage is subject to strict limitations.

Rescue operations are still ongoing in several affected areas. Media reports suggests that many people are still holding on to hope that their loved ones will be found alive under the rubble.

In the wake of the disaster, armed rebel groups involved in Myanmar's ongoing civil conflict have unilaterally declared a ceasefire. However, the military government has stated that it will not halt its operations against the rebels.

On Tuesday, Myanmar's military fired at aid convoy headed toward an earthquake-stricken region. The Ta’ang National Liberation Army, an armed rebel group, claimed that the military used machine guns to attack the convoy as it passed through Shan State. The convoy consisted of nine vehicles and was en route to Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city.

The rebel group stated that the convoy had informed the military government in advance about its route and the nature of the aid being transported. However, Myanmar's military has denied receiving any prior notification. They claim that the convoy failed to stop when instructed, which led to the gunfire. The military has assured that an investigation into the incident is underway.
