Peshawar: A police officer lost his life in Bajaur on Wednesday when unidentified gunmen attacked a polio vaccination team, officials reported.
According to police sources, the incident took place in the Damadola Serai area. The slain policeman was on his way to his duty post when assailants on a motorbike opened fire, killing him instantly. Fortunately, the polio team remained unharmed in the attack.
Following the incident, security forces and police launched a search operation in the area to track down the attackers.
The attack occurred during a five-day polio immunization campaign that began on Monday in four tehsils of Bajaur. The drive had previously been delayed due to security concerns. Despite the attack, authorities confirmed that vaccination efforts continued in the rest of the district.
Last year, officials in the recently merged tribal districts had decided to increase security for polio workers after a similar attack on a vaccination team in Orakzai in October.
In a separate development, two security personnel were killed, and two others sustained injuries in a cross-border attack in Mohmand district.
According to police, eight mortar shells were fired from across the Afghan border, landing in Khwezai and Baizai areas overnight. As a result, two Frontier Corps soldiers embraced martyrdom, while two others were wounded. Pakistani security forces retaliated in response, officials confirmed.
