United Nations: A recent UN report has revealed that women face the greatest threat to their safety in their own homes, highlighting a disturbing reality of domestic violence worldwide.
Global Statistics on Femicide: According to the report, 85,000 women were deliberately killed by men in 2023. Shockingly, 60% of these murders were committed by intimate partners or family members. The data translates to approximately 140 women and girls losing their lives daily at the hands of a spouse or relative.
A Deadly Irony: The Deputy Executive Director of UN Women commented, "These figures show that women are most vulnerable to fatal violence in the very spaces where they should feel safest — their homes."
Underreported Reality: The report also underscores that the recorded numbers may represent just the tip of the iceberg. Many cases of women’s deaths are not documented, let alone categorized accurately as femicide. Additionally, there are regions where access to reliable data is severely limited.
Every 10 Minutes, a Life Lost One of the report’s most alarming revelations is that a woman is killed by her partner or a family member approximately every 10 minutes globally.
Joint Efforts to Combat Femicide The report, based on data from 107 countries, was jointly released by UN Women and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on the 25th International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Wome
A Call to Action The findings highlight the urgent need for stronger policies, improved data collection, and global commitment to addressing violence against women. As the Deputy Executive Director emphasized, "The fight against gender-based violence requires collective action to protect women where they are most vulnerable — at home."This sobering report is a stark reminder of the global epidemic of domestic violence, urging governments and societies to prioritize women's safety in both public and private spheres.
