Islamabad, Pakistan – The threat of a potential ban on Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) in Pakistan has been temporarily averted, with the government deciding to continue the VPN registration process. Minister of State for Information Technology, Shaza Fatima, stated that the government recognizes the importance of secure communications and is working to streamline the activation and usage of VPNs. Until the activation process is finalized, the current situation regarding VPNs will remain unchanged. Earlier, the Ministry of Interior had set a deadline of November 30 for the shutdown of unregistered VPNs and had directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to enforce the restriction. Meanwhile, internet users across major cities have reported severe disruptions in both Wi-Fi and mobile data services. The slow internet speeds are causing frustration among users and adversely impacting the economy, with losses amounting to billions of rupees. The government’s move to defer the ban comes as concerns grow over maintaining secure communication channels and mitigating the economic consequences of connectivity challenges.
