U.S. Condemns RSF Attacks on Civilians in Sudan, Urges Accountability

WASHINGTON: The Trump administration has strongly denounced recent attacks by Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against civilians in North Darfur, urging that those responsible for violations of international humanitarian law be brought to justice.

Tammy Bruce, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, expressed deep concern over reports that the RSF has intentionally targeted civilians and aid workers in the Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps, where the U.N. says hundreds of thousands have been displaced in recent days.

"All parties involved in the conflict must respect their obligations under international law, and violations must not go unpunished," Bruce stated.

The ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023 due to a power struggle between Sudan's military and the RSF, has derailed the nation’s hopes for a democratic transition. Bruce emphasized the need for both sides to cease hostilities and pursue lasting peace through negotiations. However, she did not comment on whether the U.S. is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts.

Bruce also declined to confirm if the Trump administration supports a previous determination by the Biden-era State Department that the RSF and its affiliates committed acts of genocide.

In a related development, G7 foreign ministers released a statement on Tuesday demanding an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Sudan and denouncing the RSF’s role in the violence.
