The silver coin, weighing only 1.1 grams, was initially worth just over a dollar, but its rarity and rich historical significance set a new record for non-gold U.S. coins minted before the establishment of the U.S. Mint. The coin is believed to have come from the Quincy family of Boston, which included Abigail Adams, wife of the U.S. President John Adams.

Before becoming the second president of the U.S., John Adams also served as the country's first ambassador to the Netherlands.
