Saudi Energy Minister, UNEP Chief Sign MoU on Emissions and Climate Action

RIYADH: Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman met Sunday in Riyadh with Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN Under-Secretary-General, to discuss enhanced cooperation on climate action.

The meeting focused on joint efforts to advance the goals of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, while highlighting Saudi Arabia’s climate initiatives such as the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative. The two sides also reviewed the Kingdom’s work in expanding renewable energy and implementing the Circular Carbon Economy (CCE) approach to reduce emissions.

During the meeting, the Ministry of Energy and UNEP signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) under the Regional Cooperation for Emissions Reduction Initiative. The agreement aims to support MENA countries in achieving climate goals through clean energy adoption and climate policy development.

The MoU outlines cooperation in areas such as policy research, partnerships with international organizations, knowledge exchange, participation in climate events, and the creation of effective climate frameworks. The agreement reflects a shared commitment to a balanced, sustainable path toward resource efficiency and carbon emissions reduction.
