Beijing: Warner Bros. Pictures has officially announced that Tom & Jerry: Forbidden will hit theaters in China on August 9, 2025. The animated feature will premiere during the prestigious Shanghai International Film Festival.
The film follows the iconic duo as they accidentally travel through time inside a museum. They meet new allies on their journey and face a final battle against mysterious forces. Directed by No.7 Cherry Lane filmmaker Zhang Gang, the film is produced by Warner Bros. Pictures in China and will be distributed by Wu Zhou Film Distribution Co. Ltd.
According to Deadline, the storyline introduces fresh elements while keeping the classic cat-and-mouse chase alive. The movie comes as part of a broader effort by Warner Bros. to expand the Tom and Jerry franchise in Asia.
Previously, the studio produced short films for Cartoon Network and HBO Go using sets developed in Singapore and also created shorts for Japanese audiences.
This release also celebrates a milestone—the beloved series turns 85 this year. Tom and Jerry were first brought to life by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera in 1940 and have since become one of animation’s most enduring icons.
