As World AIDS Day 2024 approaches, UNAIDS stresses the importance of human rights in the fight to end AIDS as a public health issue by 2030. In their recent report, "Take the Rights Path to End AIDS," the organization warns that neglecting the rights of marginalized groups could hinder progress.

The report points out the unequal access to healthcare, especially for women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa, who are significantly affected by the epidemic. In Uganda, for example, over 860,000 women are living with HIV, part of a total of 1.4 million cases. UNAIDS emphasizes that safeguarding the rights of these groups is crucial for lowering new infections and providing fair healthcare.

The theme for World AIDS Day 2024, "My Health, My Right!" seeks to raise awareness about fighting stigma and prioritizing healthcare for those most at risk. Activists and health professionals are urging for more funding and changes in policy to tackle the challenges that prevent reaching this goal.

As world leaders get ready to observe World AIDS Day, the report acts as a call to action to close the gaps in human rights and healthcare systems, ensuring that everyone is included in the battle against AIDS.
