Vitamin C Deficiency Still Threatens Health Despite Being Preventable

Islamabad: Though uncommon in developed countries, vitamin C deficiency remains a concern for specific at-risk populations. Health experts warn that poor dietary habits, medical conditions, and lifestyle factors like smoking and alcoholism can increase vulnerability. Vitamin C, ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble nutrient essential for immune function, collagen production, and tissue repair. Symptoms may gradually appear without adequate intake, affecting skin, gums, joints, and overall health.

According to the MSD Manual and Healthline, the leading causes include diets low in fresh fruits and vegetables, cooking methods that destroy vitamins, and increased physiological demands during illness, pregnancy, or chronic inflammation. Deficiency signs include rough skin, poor immunity, bleeding gums, corkscrew hair, red hair follicles, swollen joints, and unexplained weight gain.

The daily recommended intake is 90 mg for men and 75 mg for women, with an extra 35 mg for smokers. Rich food sources include guava, oranges, lemons, strawberries, papaya, red peppers, broccoli, and parsley. Raw produce is preferred, as cooking diminishes vitamin content.

Treatment involves vitamin C supplements and a diet enriched with fresh produce. In severe cases like scurvy, high-dose supplementation is required. Prevention is simple—eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables to ensure steady vitamin C intake.
