Federal Minister Attaullah Tarar Supports PECA Amendment Act

Islamabad: Federal Minister for Information, Attaullah Tarar, stated on Thursday that the PECA (Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act) Amendment Act aims to regulate digital media, ensuring responsible journalism while safeguarding working journalists. Speaking to the media outside Parliament House, he clarified that the amendments will not affect electronic or print media.

"The PECA Amendment Bill is a significant step towards protecting journalists. It clearly defines social media, ensuring that the law is tailored for digital platforms without impacting traditional media," Tarar explained.

The minister emphasized that the legislation seeks to promote accountability on social media platforms, stating, "Why should those earning millions from social media not pay taxes?" He added that responsible journalism would be encouraged under the new framework, providing working journalists with the means to secure their livelihood.

Tarar criticized individuals using social media irresponsibly, saying, "Self-proclaimed journalists on social media do nothing but spread hate."

His remarks came in the wake of the National Assembly's passage of the PECA Amendment Bill, which prompted journalists to walk out in protest, citing concerns about the implications of the amendments.

The minister reiterated the government's commitment to protecting journalists while ensuring that digital media operates within a framework of responsibility and accountability.
